Obituary of Joyce Elizabeth MULLER

On Saturday, June 4th, 2022, in her 79th year, surrounded by the love of her family, Joyce passed away peacefully in Durham, Ontario. Loving mother to Marianne (Doug), Martin, and Marlena (Joseph). A very proud nana to Matthew and Mark. Dear sister to Carol (Brian) and Auntie Joyce to Brian and Maureen. Joyce leaves behind many cousins, dear friends and her beloved cat, Kevin. Born on July 25, 1943, in Lachine Que, Joyce is predeceased by her parents Ernest and Doris Grigsby of Point Claire, Quebec. Joyce graduated from Sherbrooke Hospital School of Nursing and went on to study at McGill University. She worked at various Montreal hospitals gaining experience in critical care and obstetrics. In 1971 Joyce and her family moved to Sault Ste. Marie where she worked at the General Hospital as a staff nurse in general medicine and part of the code team. She later moved to the position of Nursing Supervisor and Nurse Manager of ICU. Through her years in Sault Ste. Marie, Joyce earned Diplomas in Occupational Health and Safety and Advanced Cardiac Life Support as well as operating a family farm in Echo Bay, Ontario. She even found time to earn her pilot’s license. She was the best of Nursing. Patients loved her and a co-worker remembers her as, “knowledgeable, unshakeable, and unfazed by whatever her shifts threw at her. We always felt supported with her on shift”. In 1992, Joyce moved to an Outpost Nursing position in Missanabie, Ontario, with the Lady Dunn Health Centre in Wawa, Ontario, where she remained for the next 14 years. Her free spirit and fierce independence were a perfect fit for the never-ending demands of the job and adventures of the north. Joyce loved the peace of the north and spent her time fishing, photographing landscapes and wildlife, and treating many friends and acquaintances to her delicious culinary delights and baked goodies. In 2006 Joyce moved to Priceville in Southern Ontario, to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Her love of animals and wonderful sense of humour provided many new adventures for her, in her well-earned retirement. She will be greatly missed by all she touched – both human and animal. A funeral service and interment for Joyce will take place at St. Stephen’s Church in Lachine, Quebec in September.
